About Mermaid Yoga

Katie Holmstrom - Founder and Lead Instructor

Aloha!  My name is Katie and I am the founder of Mermaid Yoga. Launching Mermaid Yoga was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I infuse a large part of my heart and soul into the experience delivered by Mermaid Yoga and can honestly say the business gives me life. If you want to see me light up then just ask me about the people I have had the honor of guiding in our classes and the impact we have had on each other.

Mermaid Yoga was founded in PNW Washington in June 2020 and joyfully relocated to Maui, HI at the end of 2021.  Maui has been a long time dream of mine and I cannot believe how fortunate I am to be living my dreams.  My husband, Jared, and I were married on Maui in 2007 and it feels suiting that we are running our own business in a place that has always felt like home.

I have been practicing yoga for over 10 years and teaching since 2015.  I earned my 200 hr YTT from Wisdom Flow Yoga School on Maui, my SUP yoga teaching certificate from SUP Yoga Center, and my paddleboard teaching credential from PSUPA.

The beginning of my yoga journey ignited a lifelong exploration and excavation into my being.  When I first started going to yoga classes once a week at my local gym I noticed I would show up angry and resentful but by the end, my problems didn’t carry as much energy or importance as in the beginning.   My angry feelings usually came back but they were a little less intense when they did.  It took me a while to put the pieces together, but I realized that I would show up with a million thoughts flooding my head and that during the class the thoughts were temporarily set aside.  My focus during yoga class was on the breath and the movements cued by the instructor; I didn’t have the ability to entertain thoughts AND pay attention to my breath and movements simultaneously.  This gap in my thoughts was what allowed me to feel that sense of peace at the end of class.  I am still astonished a decade later how yoga is a guaranteed access point into the quiet stillness that is always present in my being.

Over time, the practice gently nudged me to evolve and completely changed my life and perspective.  When I was finally able to see just how much the yoga practice and philosophy impacted my life for the better, I was inspired to begin teaching as an offering to help other people along their personal journeys.  The yoga practice carries all of it’s own magic, I am fortunate enough to facilitate for others to discover the magic themselves.  My hope for my students is that they are able to observe their own being and have fun while doing it.

When I’m not on my mat or paddleboard I really enjoy adventuring with my lovely husband, Jared, catching a sunrise or sunset, reading, relaxing, hiking, swimming, climbing, traveling, hanging out with my dogs, gardening, dreaming up custom jewelry designs, biking, camping and hanging out with my amazing friends and family.
