About our founder
Katie Holmstrom
Founder/ Yoga & SUP Yoga instructor
Aloha!ย My name is Katie and I am the founder of Mermaid Yoga. Launching Mermaid Yoga was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I infuse a large part of my heart and soul into the experience delivered by Mermaid Yoga and can honestly say the business gives me life. If you want to see me light up then just ask me about the people I have had the honor of guiding in our classes and the impact they have had on me.
I have been practicing yoga for 10 years and teaching for 5 years.ย I earned my 200 hr YTT from Wisdom Flow Yoga School on Maui, my SUP yoga certificate from SUP Yoga Center, and my paddleboard teaching credential from PSUPA.
The beginning of my yoga journey ignited a lifelong exploration and excavation into my being.ย When I first started going to yoga classes once a week at my local gym I noticed I would show up angry and resentful but by the end, my problems didnโt carry as much energy or importance as in the beginning. ย My angry feelings usually came back but they were a little less intense when they did.ย It took me a while to put the pieces together, but I realized that I would show up with a million thoughts flooding my head and that during the class the thoughts were temporarily set aside.ย My focus during yoga class was on the breath and the movements cued by the instructor; I didnโt have the ability to entertain thoughts AND pay attention to my breath and movements simultaneously.ย This gap in my thoughts was what allowed me to feel that sense of peace at the end of class.ย I am still astonished a decade later how yoga is a guaranteed access point into the quiet stillness that is always present in my being.
